Toxic Food and Substances: Sugar Substitutes or Food/Dinks Containing Sugar Substances

515696_soda_ Look at any pack of gum and most sugar free candies and you will find xylitol within the listed ingredients. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener better described as a sugar alcohol. It has a mild laxative effect on humans but could be life threatening in dogs. It is now listed on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center site as not only a possible connection to hypoglycemia in dogs but much more serious liver disease.

Xylitol was first discovered in 1891 by German chemist Emil Fisher. It is naturally occurring in many fungus (maybe one of the chemicals in mushrooms that make them toxic to dogs?), berries, lettuce, and trees. It is widely used in Europe and developing a larger market hold in North America as it causes low insulin release in humans making it ideal for diabetics or people on a low carbohydrate diet as well as many other beneficial attributes for us two legged mammals.

In dogs however, it is lethal. Instead of having a show absorption rate like in humans, in dogs, all sugar alcohols absorb quickly – under 30 minutes. Xylitol ingestion in dogs is linked with extremely high rate of insulin release that concurs with a drop in blood glucose concentration. How high is the insulin release? Six times that of normal sugar!

The first symptom is vomiting, usually within 30 minutes of ingestion or up to 12 hours in the case of the dog swallowing a piece of gum. Other symptoms follow: lethargy, ataxia, collapse, and seizure.

Latest findings now show that 12 to 24 hours after ingestion, dogs develop elevated liver enzyme activity. In a study, six out of eight dogs did not develop the hypoglycemic attributes and seemed fine for the initial 12 to 24 hours before acute liver damage developed. Five of the eight dogs died or were euthanized to save them the discomfort of a slow death.

The lowest dose associated with liver failure so far is .5g/kg although this is not an accurate basis due to the many mitigating circumstances. It is believed that over .1gr/kg leaves the dog open to developing the hypoglycemic reaction where as the .5gr/kg dose is related to liver failure.

Figuring out how much your dog ingested is the difficult part. A rough guess at the amount of xylitol in gum is .3gr/kg. A cup of powdered xylitol weighs about 190 grams. Sugar free muffins and cookies seem to be the most common cause of xylitol poisoning in dogs.

Treatment includes intravenous fluids with glucose to counteract the hypoglycemia as well as liver meds to lessen the overall impact on the organ. Plasma and/or blood transfusions may be necessary in a severe overdose.

Watch what you feed you dog, even as a treat. Eating a sugar-free cookie? Don’t give him any, no matter how much he begs and keep sugar-free gum and candies away from him!

I am Having Trouble Potty Training My Puppy

169520_little_redQuestion:

I am having a problem potty training my puppy. She holds her pee for a long time so I can’t tell about when she needs to go. She won’t go when I take her out side;but if I catch her she will finish on the puppy pad. HELP

Alfreda

ANSWER:

Hello Alfreda,

In your brief description of the problem you do not mention your pup’s breed. Had you started training your pup on puppy pads? Often this can confuse puppies.

When I got my blue merle sheltie, Krystal it was the first pup I had had in many years. I was used to paper training them. It was then suggested that I crate train. The first few weeks I had her I thought she would never be house trained. Once I started crate training she was house trained in four days!!!!

How crate training works: The pup is in the crate unless you are around, you play with the pup, but then it goes in the crate. The pup will not soil where it sleeps.

The other thing is, puppies have small bladders and need to go frequently about once every two hours. If they get excited they will urinate

It is important to make sure you or someone else is there to take the pup out frequently. When your pup goes outside, reward her with treats instantly and praise her. If she goes on the puppy pad say nothing.

Dogs are smart, there is what is called “dog arithmetic ” where they figure out that one behavior gets them food and praise while another behavior gets them nothing. They will soon do the behavior that gives them they pay out.

Scolding the pup for not going outside is a waste of your energy and will not solve the problem, nor will physical punishment help.

Many many years ago it was thought that one could house train a pup by rubbing its nose in the urine or stool when it went inside as well as hitting it on the nose. My how things have changed. We now realize that all this does is provoke fear.

So basically ignore your pup when she goes on the puppy pad instead of outside. Another suggestion I have is to take away the puppy pads completely as this may confuse her.

Once the puppy pads are gone she will either go on the floor a couple times or learn that outside is where to eliminate. Another suggestion is to take her to the same spot where she has previously gone so her scent is still there.

Good luck, hope this helps.

The amazing journey of becoming a positive dog trainer had begun. I am still on this new adventure and learning more every day. I did not realize there was so much information and theory to learn about canine behavior and emotions. My social work background has helped immensely as much of the theory I learned at university about human emotions applies aptly to dogs.”
